Subject: IMPORTANT fed report on "mental health"

From Privileges to Rights: People Labeled with Psychiatric Disabilities Speak for Themselves
To look at the report on the Internet, go to:

http://www.ncd.gov/newsroom/publications/privileges.html

I'm surprised that some people still don't have a copy of the National Council on Disability report on "mental health" and human rights, which came out on January 20, 2000.

I know there are a lot of government reports in the world on "mental health."

You can throw away a lot of those reports, and get the best.

This is a federal government report on human rights and "mental health" and it's superb. It's by an independent federal disability agency, the President's National Council on Disability.

(The only question is whether higher-ups in the federal government will FOLLOW their own report, or is it window dressing?)

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN COPY YOU ARE MISSING OUT.

And if you have your own copy, NCD can use written FEEDBACK from people about how great it is.

Plus, the agency said it would honor all reasonable requests for multiple copies.

This bound, purple-covered 116 page report is wonderful to get into the right hands -- media, legislators, board members, etc.

The ten core recommendations read like the psychiatric survivors movement's mission statement -- number one is moving from forced psychiatry to a totally voluntary system, number three includes ending electroshock, etc.

The name of the report is "FROM PRIVILEGES TO RIGHTS: PEOPLE LABELED WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISABILITIES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES."

Order copies -- or provide feedback -- by e-mailing your postal mailing address to Stacey Brown at NCD, her e-mail address is: sbrown@ncd.gov.

Or fax to them at: 202/272 2022

Or write:

National Council on Disability
1331 F Street, NW, Suite 1050
Washington, DC 20004

(They ask folks not to for your copy, though.)

BELOW IS A LITTLE FORM for you to use if you want, couldn't be easier. Either copy and e-mail it, or print it out and fax it.

Just add your postal address to this and e-mail to <sbrown@ncd.gov>
